  CO2 Frost in Martian HiRISE Visible Imagery (2023)

  The Science Understanding through Data Science funded a project to map the global Martian seasonal CO2 frost cycle. We released the HiRISE images and associated labels to train ML models to detect the presence of frost. The HiRISE images were annotated by three expert labelers for frost as well as other metadata like the visual frost indicators, geologic context, and labeler confidence. The dataset also includes extensive documentation, a Datasheet for Dataset, and code examples.

  OWLS Microscopy Data (2022)

  The Ocean Worlds Life Surveyor is a life-detection instrument suite for ocean worlds. This dataset contains recordings from two instruments from the Extant Life Volume Imaging System (ELVIS); the Digital Holographic Microscope (DHM) and the Volumetric Fluorescent Imager (VFI, also referred to as FLFM). These datasets were used to train and optimize the Onboard Science Instrument Autonomy (OSIA) software, the Holographic Examination of Life-like Motility (HELM) for the DHM and the FLFM Autonomous Motility Evaluation (FAME) for the VFI.

  Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Imagery for LROCNet Moon Classifier (2022)

  We provide imagery used to train LROCNet -- our Convolutional Neural Network classifier of orbital imagery of the moon. Images are divided into train, validation, and test zip files, which contain class specific sub-folders. We have three classes - fresh crater, old crater, and none. Classes are described in detail in the attached labeling guide.

  Barefoot Rover Terrain Data (2021)

  This archive contains test data of the Barefoot Rover wheel on multiple materials. The Barefoot Rover wheel was used to demonstrate an instrumented wheel concept which utilizes a 2D pressure grid, an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) sensor and machine learning (ML) to extract meaningful metrics from the interaction between the wheel and surface terrain.

  MSL Classified Images (2020)

  This data set consists of images spanning 24 classes that were collected by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL, Curosity) rover by three instruments (Mastcam Right eye, Mastcam Left eye, and MAHLI). These images are the "browse" version of each original data product, not full resolution. They are roughly 256x256 pixels each.

  MER Opportunity and Spirit Rovers Pancam Images Labeled Data Set (2020)

  The data set is based on 3,004 images collected by the Pancam instruments mounted on the Opportunity and Spirit rovers from NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) mission. We used rotation, skewing, and shearing augmentation methods to increase the total collection to 70,864. Based on the MER Data Catalog User Survey, we identified 25 classes of both scientific (e.g. soil trench, float rocks, etc.) and engineering (e.g. rover deck, Pancam calibration target, etc.) interests. Each image is allowed to be assigned multiple labels.

  HiRISE Classified Landmarks (2020)

  This data set contains landmarks which were detected and extracted from HiRISE browse images. For each original landmark, we cropped a square bounding box that includes the full extent of the landmark plus a 30-pixel margin to left, right, top and bottom. Each cropped landmark was resized to 227x227 pixels.

  Planetary Body Plumes (Annotated) (2019)

  This data set was compiled to aid in evaluating methods for automated analysis of images to detect planetary bodies and limbs. It contains manually generated labels for 308 NASA images of planets and moons. The labels annotate the location of the limb (edge) of the body and plumes emitted by the body, if any. "Plume" in this context refers to any bright material emitted from the body, such as icy plumes from Enceladus or volcanic plumes from Io. 112 of the labeled images contain plumes.

  These datasets were used for experiments in the paper: Kerner, H. R., Wellington, D. F., Wagstaff, K. L., Bell III, J. F., Ben Amor, H. Novelty Detection for Multispectral Images with Application to Planetary Exploration. In Proceedings of Innovative Applications in Artificial Intelligence (IAAI/AAAI), 2019.

  Mars Target Encyclopedia Annotated Documents (LPSC Abstracts) (2017)

  This data set contains annotated text versions of 2-page abstracts published at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in 2015 and 2016.

  Mars Target Encyclopedia Database (2017)

  The Mars Target Encyclopedia (MTE) contains information about Mars mission surface targets that have appeared in scientific publications and captures information and excerpts in a searchable database.

  Mars Surface Image (Curiosity rover) Labeled Data Set (2017)

  This data set consists of 6691 images spanning 24 classes that were collected by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL, Curosity) rover by three instruments (Mastcam Right eye, Mastcam Left eye, and MAHLI). These images are the "browse" version of each original data product, not full resolution. They are roughly 256x256 pixels each. The images were collected from sols 3 to 1060 (August 2012 to July 2015). The exact train/validation/test splits are given in individual files.
